This session explores how responsible publishing practices intersect with open research data, journal selection, and research integrity. It’s designed to help researchers make informed, ethical, and impactful publishing decisions.

  • What does “responsible publishing” mean in the context of open research?
  • Avoiding predatory journals: red flags and verification tools (e.g., DOAJ, Think. Check. Submit.).
  • Criteria for selecting a journal: rigour, reach, readership
  • How to navigate publisher agreements
  • Look at alternative places to publish your work and the implications of Open Access and the REF.
  • Authorship ethics and contribution transparency
  • Research Integrity– Get to grips with LJMU’s commitment to responsible research practices, including key policies and support available.

Getting your research published can feel like a confusing and challenging task. Not only do you need to consider the wide range of options available, there is also the thorny issue of journal quality to consider, as well as potential financial costs and implications for future research and opportunities.

The starting point for this workshop is that where and when to publish should be a strategic decision and therefore require careful planning.

We will:

  • Encourage you to reflect on how you currently make publishing choices and explore ways that you can plan you publishing strategy even before you start writing up your research.
  • Look at how being proactive about publishing can increase your chances of getting your work ‘out there’.
  • Consider journal and article-based metrics and discuss the importance of both qualitative and quantitative data for deciding where to publish.
  • Look at alternative places to publish your work and the implications of Open Access and the REF.
