This comprehensive session brings together best practices in online student engagement, focusing on both discussion board activities and social engagement tools within Canvas. The session aims to provide practical insights into designing engaging online activities, rooted in the experiences of LJMU staff and established distance learning practices.

Designing Interactive Discussion Boards: Learn how to create simple yet effective discussion board activities on Canvas. This includes sharing these activities with students, encouraging participation, and monitoring engagement.

Hands-On Experience: Get practical exposure by trying out various discussion board activities, enhancing your understanding of the tool's functionality and potential in engaging students.

Social Engagement in Blended Learning: Explore how to use existing Canvas tools to foster online social engagement, crucial for active blended learning environments. This segment is developed in response to the Academy's recent staff survey, highlighting the need for enhanced guidance in this area.

Practical Examples and Idea Sharing: We'll provide numerous examples of social engagement activities. There will also be opportunities to discuss and share ideas on how these can be integrated into your teaching practices.

We are pleased to announce the schedule and open registration for Open Research Week 2025: Monday, 24th February to Thursday 27th February 2025. Open Research Week is a series of events that discusses new, developing and current practice in all things Open Research. It is organised by Edge Hill University, the University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University, and the University of Essex.

All events are free, and you can register for each one individually. All sessions will be recorded, so if you cannot attend, please sign up and these recordings will be sent out in due course.

As a specific call to action, please feel free to share with your colleagues, contacts and comrades that are interested in Open Research. All are welcome.

Do you want to learn how to manage your references effectively when researching and save time when writing up your assignment? Try using the EndNote Online referencing tool.

This session will show you how to:

         
  • Create an EndNote Online account;

It will include live demonstrations of EndNote Online, explain its features and how to Cite While You Write in Word.

This session is all about seeing if two variables are related in some way. We will look at:

  • Producing crosstabulations and performing the chi-squared test of association
  • Spearman’s and Pearson’s correlations
  • Interpreting and writing up the results

This session will be an hour long, with a further half hour for discussion and questions.

In order to get the most out of this session, it is advised that you have a basic familiarity with how to start SPSS and input data.

Further information will be posted on the Maths & Statistics Canvas module before the class.

Note: If you are using your own computer, please make sure you have SPSS fully installed before joining the class. You can find instructions at the LJMU Software for Staff and Students download page .
