The Doctoral Academy is offering information sessions to provide LJMU students and graduates with the opportunity to learn more about doctoral study. The sessions are also open to external candidates and members of staff.

The sessions will be on campus, lead by Professor Scott Foster and Gillian Dyche. Location is Room G07, John Foster Building, 80-98 Mount Pleasant, Liverpool, L3 5UZ

eDoc is a comprehensive online progression system for the LJMU PGR community. It keeps all your PGR information in one place and streamlines:


1. Supervision meetings

2. Training and events

3. Progression monitoring

4. Confirmation of Registration

5. Changes to registration for example, Leaves of absence

6. Examinations

The session will provide an overview of the system and highlight key functionality from a supervisor's perspective. Outside of these times, if you require any specific support you can request a one-to-one session via DoctoralAcademy@ljmu.ac.uk.

This induction is mandatory for all new supervisors of PhDs and MPhils, and for staff new to LJMU who are intending to supervise. It will:

1. Orientate you to research supervision and support at LJMU

2. Ensure you are familiar with your responsibilities set out in the Research Degrees Framework;

3. Enable you to plan for supervisory meetings and maintain an accurate progression record;

4. Help you to recognise key factors that shape the PGR experience and the ways in which supervision can enhance this experience.

Some of the content may also be of interest to supervisors of Professional Doctorates but the regulatory focus is on PhD programmes.

Teas and coffees provided but please note that lunch is not included.

The use of Independent Chairs to oversee the PhD Viva Voce examination is increasingly common in the sector. At LJMU, Independent Chairs can play a crucial role in ensuring and witnessing that examinations are conducted fairly and in accordance with University regulations. This session outlines the roles and responsibilities of the Independent Chair and allows participants to learn from 'this really happened' case studies.
